Subfloor Prep and Concrete Grinding

Proper subfloor preparation ensures your new floor meets manufacturer specifications, protects all warranties, and delivers performance that lasts for generations.

The Foundation of Every Great Floor

The start of any great floor begins long before a single plank is laid. At JAK Wood Flooring, we know that the foundation beneath your floor determines how it will perform for decades to come. Whether your project sits on plywood or concrete, our team has the expertise, equipment, and attention to detail to ensure a solid, stable, and perfectly flat foundation—so your finished floor not only looks beautiful, but stands the test of time.

Why Subfloor Preparation Matters

A quality installation depends on a sound subfloor. Installing over an uneven or unstable base can cause:
  • Squeaky floors and movement between planks
  • Hollow spots or echoing sounds
  • Excessive expansion or contraction
  • Finish or adhesive failure
  • Even complete plank separation and breakage

Our Wood Subfloor Preparation Process

Every floor we install begins with a detailed inspection and moisture testing protocol.

Moisture Testing & Survey

We measure the subfloor’s moisture content alongside ambient humidity and temperature to compare with the finished floor’s readings. Using straight edges and laser levels, we identify high and low areas requiring attention. Most manufacturers specify a flatness tolerance of 1/8″ within 6 feet or 3/16″ within 10 feet—and we make sure your subfloor meets or exceeds those standards.

Once surveyed, we:

  • Refasten panels to eliminate squeaks.
  • Sand plywood seams and remove high spots.
  • Feather transitions for a smooth, even surface that meets manufacturer tolerances. After leveling, we apply the appropriate moisture barrier—felt paper for nail-down floors or a liquid-applied barrier for glue-down installations—ensuring your subfloor is ready for installation.

Our Concrete Subfloor Preparation Process

Every concrete floor we install begins with a detailed inspection and moisture testing protocol.

Moisture Testing & Survey

Just like wood subfloors, we measure the concrete subfloor’s moisture content alongside ambient humidity and temperature as explained above.

Concrete subfloors require specialized grinding and leveling. We use Roll and Discus planetary grinders with HEPA dust control to flatten high areas.
Once prepared, we:

Once surveyed, we:

  • Apply a liquid moisture barrier.
  • Patch isolated low spots where needed.
  • For widespread unevenness, perform a full self-leveling process:
    • Apply primer over the moisture barrier.
    • Use laser levels to set and cut leveling pins to exact height.
    • Install perimeter foam isolation tape.
    • Mix and pour self-leveling compound using Collomix Levmixers connected to vacuums for a clean, precise application.

The result? A mirror-flat, smooth concrete surface ready for hardwood, engineered, or vinyl flooring.

Compatibility with Flooring Types

Subfloor preparation is critical for all flooring types, including:

  • Floating click-and-lock systems
  • Glue-down vinyl planks
  • Engineered hardwood
  • Solid hardwood

The result? A mirror-flat, smooth concrete surface ready for hardwood, engineered, or vinyl flooring.

Concrete Grinding & Self-Leveling

Concrete slabs are rarely perfect—but our process makes them so. Using industrial-grade grinding and self-leveling equipment, we eliminate imperfections that could compromise your new floors.
  • Grinding: Removes high spots, surface contaminants, and adhesive residues.
  • Moisture Mitigation: Applied barriers prevent future issues like cupping or adhesive failure.
  • Self-Leveling: Our precision-guided pours create flatness within tight tolerances for glue-down or floating installations.

Every step is performed with professional-grade machinery and clean, dust-controlled methods—protecting your home environment while ensuring perfect results.
